Dave Grohl said in a recent interview “Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy and old fucking drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they’ll suck, too. And then they’ll fucking start playing and they’ll have the best time they’ve ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they’ll become Nirvana.” Under the Bodhi Tree is a band that has taken these words and ingrained them in the very core of their beings. Made up of 2 friends from Bainbridge Island, Under the Bodhi Tree is the most honest rock band to leave the garage in years. A motley group of performers, Under the Bodhi Tree exemplifies garage rock with an interesting blend of Rock, Funk and Punk that captivates, overwhelms and drags you on a rough and raucous ride to musical nirvana. Motley garage rockers that make up Under the Bodhi Tree are: Paul Depew, with a hard edge on both guitar and vocals, and Duncan Newland-Thompson keeping things funky with his energetic drum fills and solid rhythm. All of them accomplished musicians both locally and abroad they cocooned themselves in a cold cement garage with a $40 side-of-the-road drum kit, cheap amps, broken guitars and a single foam filled mic and emerged with a medley of rock and roll that overwhelmed the first audiences so much they were not allowed back due to excessive rock... They refined their sound, upgraded some gear and started to build a style that incorporated the entirety of their influences, distilled down. After a little success from their first garage single “Am I Dreaming” they reached out to a few local studios that they knew. After being turned down by Robert Lang due to the Foo Fighters recording Subterranean from Sonic Highways at the same time, they got an offer from another historic Seattle Studio, London Bridge. They booked some time and recorded some songs and thought they were good enough to publish on an EP so they took them and burned some copies and put together 100 copies by hand to give to their fans at their EP Release show at The Nectar Lounge on December 21st. They will soon be entering back into the studio to work on their first full length album at Studio X to be released in the fall. A couple of guys who got together with some shitty gear, to play some shitty songs that they loved, for the people that meant the most to them, in an attempt to give something back to the world. Peace. Love. Rock and Roll.
